Two different pet owners decide caring for their cats is too much and leave notes for charity staff

Staff arriving at The Mayhew Animal Home in Kensal Green on Monday 19th April, saw a person peddling away on his bicycle after dumping a cat carrier round the corner from the door at 7.30am.

The wicker carrier had a note attached which asked staff at the Home to care for her, writing she ‘is extremely lovely’.

Staff had no sooner finished settling the shaken and apprehensive four year old in to the cattery, after Mayhew vets had checked her health, when another cat was brought in to reception at 4pm. A member of the public had found him round the corner from the Home abandoned in his carrier.

Another scribbled note was found with the second carrier, along with a Pedigree certificate detailing the cat is a Petticoat British Shorthair. Again the letter to The Mayhew sang the praises of the four year old male, named Spikey, listing that he loves cuddles and is a very affectionate house cat who eats Whiskas in gravy.

The note also mentioned that Spikey had a heart murmur, was soon in need of his vaccination booster and his nails clipped.

Mayhew CEO, Caroline Yates, said

“Although it is certainly a good thing these cats were left at The Mayhew, they were still vulnerable on the streets in their carriers. We understand that in some circumstances it is very difficult but we would implore people to come in to the Home, so staff can find out more about their pet and the reasons for giving it up.

This goes so much towards helping us find a new home. In the case of Spikey, it may be that medical reasons have factored in the decision to give him up. Sadly, too many people are unprepared for the costs incurred by owning an anima,l not least veterinary bills which can be prohibitive without insurance in place.”
